Mermaid Sighting Orkney Islands....

The Orkney Islands lie off the northern tip of Scotland where the North Sea and the Atlantic Ocean meet. Locals on the Orkney Islands claim to see mermaids frequently.

One of the more talked about sightings is the "Deerness Mermaid" sighted in 1890. (Deerness is located in Newark Bay.) Hundreds of people claimed to see her (or them), and this is one such statement made from a local peasant:

"It is about six to seven feet in length, has a little black head, with neck, a snow white body and two arms, and in swimming it just appears like a human being. At times it will appear to be siding on a sunken rock, and will wave and work its hands."

Another such famous report occured in 1913. An entire crew of a fishing boat reporting seeing a "Sea Woman" rising about the waters at least 3 feet and wearing a "shawl" drapped over her arms. They reported sighting her on 3 separate occassions.

Mermaid Sighting 1943....

-From the Diary of Christopher Columbus, January 9, 1493-

"The day before, when the Admiral was going to the Rio del Oro, he said he saw three mermaids who came quite high out of the water but were not as pretty as they are depicted, for somehow in the face they look like men. He said that he saw some in Guinea on the coast of Manegueta."
